Let's Talk Turkey - Or Not

I know several people who have pet turkeys. I love many fowl.

Something happened the other day that has not happened in the eight years I have lived here. I saw four wild turkeys crossing a highway next to the railroad tracks. It was so unusual as to feel like a dream. They were all very tall.

I have only recently realized that not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving. Now, I know better, but I had somehow forgotten that it was a U.S. holiday. I guess I thought those pilgrims went all over the place, jumping off onto rocks worldwide. However, not so.

So I'm going to make sure and post other graphics, too...I like a smorgasbord of graphics...

Halloo Lady Jane, I've been thinking about yer daughter and the imminent arrival of grandbaby Jalina all night...hoping, wishing, and praying it goes well for them...

Lovely turkey! I've never heard of any kept as pets, folks just hunt them to eat around these parts. Being from Germany, my mother was surprised to learn about Thanksgiving, but now she says it's her favorite holiday:)

  • ~~Carol~~

Good Morning! I'm just catching up on my blog reading and wanted to wish you congrats on the new job!
We saw alot of wild turkeys when we were in Indiana recently. Made me glad that I don't eat turkey!
    Happy Monday!

    Good Morning Lady Penniwig.
Thanks for stopping by sweetie. Yes it is going to be another warm week. I am having trouble getting into the spirit again with these warm temps. Didn't even need a sweater again this morning.

Hope you are well. I think of you often.
    Country hugs, Sherry

Well, everybody SHOULD celebrate Thanksgiving, because it is a delightful holiday! ;)

    Hey Penniwig!

I see wild turkeys all the time where I live. Just this past Friday I actually got a few pictures of them crossing the road in front of me! I'll post them next week or so as I'm featuring the Veterans of my family this week.

I have had neighbors when I was a kid who had turkeys but I think they had them to eat. The wild ones don't look anything like the pet ones! lol

    Hugs,
    Angela

    I love the turkey graphic!
I also would like to have a pet turkey- but alas my little Basset Hound Molly would probably have it or lunch! Thanks for posting about my giveaway!

  • ^..^Corgidogmama

That's right...you have an international following too, so must provide for them as well as the rest of us turkey lovers!
It always seems that turkey eating lasts for an entire month once it starts on T-day. Not a ham person, so the bird is the only thing that will do, twice a year.
Like the thanks for stopping by graphics, those will be used by everyone.
Good luck today dear P'wig. Hope all goes well in your new endeavor.
Let's hope too, that all goes well for LJ, and Jalina pops out safe and soon!

When I lived in the foothills of Ohio I would come across clans of turkeys on the backroads. They would fly up into trees to get out of my way! My mom ( as a girl) used to live on a turkey farm and had a turkey named Betty. They sure are magnificent animals.

I 'd love to have a turkey as a pet and a lamb, pig, meerkat, lama and duck....all. my fantasies.

Lovely labels you have here. We don 't celebrate the American Thanksgiving but in our churches we have thanksgiving or Harvest Sunday celebrations.

You are right about being a royal food taster.....I 'd love the job too. I 'd volunteer actually.

  • Dani

Many cultures have some sort of harvest festival so can relate.......Thanksgiving is a wonderful holiday, I like it because there is not as much commercialism..a time to gather, enjoy family and friends, appreciate and be thankful for all the goodness around us, have some fun too!

After having the 14 wild turkeys hanging around a while back, I have new respect for the dignity of the big birds. I can see why Ben Franklin wanted to make them our national bird--although I agree the eagle was the better choice! It wouldn't have been good for everyone to be eating our national bird to celebrate Thanksgiving.

  • Blue Creek Home

Thanks for the turkey!!! Thanksgiving is big here as it is my husband's favorite holiday. This is perfect to use to make yet another Thanksgiving decoration!

    Hi Holly,
Haven't we americanized everyone so that Thanksgiving is world wide? :)
I got your giveaway presents ok - they're GREAT! Thank you again, very much!! I got the photo and thank you on my post today.
Hope you have a great day,
    Robin

I enjoy Thanksgiving as I get to eat all that home cooked food. I do not cook it, but where I spend the holiday, cooks good. As usual, nice graphics.

    Gobble gobble gobble. Peeeep!!!!

That's hello from our pet Tilly Turkey.

We're starting to plan the meal so it feels for real now. These darn holidays keep blowing past at a rate that is incomprehenisble these days.

  • Mary

The only wild turkey I've ever seen was in a bottle bwwwaaahhhhaaa. Forgive me, we have been on hurricane mode down here and right about now a drink might actually be in order!

I have been cooking up a storm of holiday meals for posting. I'm quite I have put on 15 pounds in the last week.

  • Olde Dame Penniwig

LMBO, Mary...ha ha, if you drink enough, you can see PLENTY of things...pink turkeys...lol...ha ha I never touch the stuff anymore...

  • ClassyChassy

I have a friend who had a pet turkey named Carl. Then it started to lay eggs, but it's name was STILL Carl! She had a long and happy life - a huge bird, with never a worry of being on the Thanksgiving Table!

  • Gwen

It was just a bit ago that I too realized that not every country celebrates Thanksgiving like we do. Like Dani said, most cultures have some type of harvest festival. Me? I like Oktoberfest the best:)

    Gobble, gobble!

Just dropping in this evening! Alas, I love turkey too ~ yum, yum. (sorry, pet turkeys are not to be eaten, of course)
Reminds me of when my little girl (Kristen) came home from school (about 2nd grade) and had a note informing parents that there were chickens available; but, that they had been fed hormones so they weren't sure how BIG they would get. Well, big round blue eyes just begged for one of those chickens.

I have a 'Far Side" cartoon mind and so I envisioned this 10 foot tall chick with a beard; Krissy walking around under it (so to speak) with a string tined to its neck.

We made a home for Ralph the Rooster (named after my father) I never knew fowl had such personalities but Ralph would crow at one on demand if you said, "Hello Ralph!" One time a sales person actually made it into our house, and Ralph was still rather small and was allowed to perch on the back of my couch or rocker. Well, this totally unnerved the salesman and he made a quick retreat out the door. I think he was afraid his head might get decorated!

Your turkey reminded me of our fowl pets ~ Hubcap the duckling (who swam about in an old hubcap) as well as Ralph.

    XX Bev
