From Scratch: Simple Rosettes from a SINGLE STRIP of Paper - How To's

See my pictures and instructions on my regular Rosette page, too - these instructions are especially tailored for those making rosettes completely from scratch, from a leftover strip of pretty paper!

You will need:
  • A strip of pretty paper
  • Two small cardstock circles
  • Hot glue
  • Scissors
  • Gems or glitter to finish

Step One: Cut a Simple Strip of Paper

Cut a strip of paper out. In the example, I make a strip about 8.5" long, about 1 inch tall. This made a petite rosette. You can make larger rosettes by cutting out LONGER and WIDER strips of paper.

Now, use a ruler to see how wide 1/8th inch is. I'm going to pleat the strip, like a fan, every 1/8th inch or so!
Super Hint: Use your nails to really sharpen the pleats!

Step Two: Glue the Ends Together

For some reason, you often have to cut off a SINGLE PLEAT in order for the ends to "nest" properly in an invisible and strong connection!

I use HOT GLUE on these rosettes, as they like to pull apart.

Put hot glue sparingly along one pleat, nest it with the other.

Step Three: Gather and Push Down

Now, gather one end of the pleated "tube" you have made. Just gather it with your fingers. Then, PUSH DOWN lightly on it. It will spread out and you will see your rosette forming, before your eyes!

Step Four: Stabilize

Use a dollop of hot glue and a little cardstock circle to pop over the middle of the rosette. Add the glue sparingly mainly to the tops of the pleats around the middle hole.

Turn over over do the other side, too!

Step Five, My Favorite: Decorating

This is where you can add a paper circle, a punched-out shape, a pretty paper flower, or a "gem" to the middle of the cardstock or paper circle!

My super hint: BEFORE PLEATING, when the strip has been cut, PUNCH ALONG one edge with a fancy edging punch! Then pleat and gather! Very lacey and pretty!
